THE PLAIN DEALER, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1988- -7-d George S. Dively, 86, business, civic leader George S. Dively, a prominent business and civic leader here, died Tuesday night in Mr. Boca Dively, Raton, 86, following a stroke." was chairman emeritus Harris which he developed from a small manufacturer of printing presses to a multinational producer of hightechnology communications and information processing equipment. Mr.

Dively was hired by Harris-Seybold a Dively predecessor to Harris in 1937 as assistant to the secretary-treasurer. In 1941, he became a director of the company. Three years later, Mr. Dively was named vice president and general manager of Harris Corp. and in 1947, its president.

He was president and chairman of the board from 1954 through 1961, when he relinquished the presidency. He remained chairman until he retired in 1972. Under Mr. Dively's leadership, the company's annual sales increased from $10 million to more than $2 billion. Mr.

Dively was born in Claysburg, in the heart of the Pennsylvania soft coal district. His father was a schoolteacher. Mr. Dively will be buried with family members in a 200-year-old cemetery in Bedford County, Pa. He prepared himself to be an industrialist while attending the engineering school of the University of Pittsburgh and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

His first job was with North American Refractories as an engineer during the Depression. He then bought an investment banking company, sold it, worked at Republic Steel Corp. for a while, but decided he preferred working for a smaller company. He then of went to a book titled "The Power of Professional Management," written by Mr. Dively in 1971, he said, "The leader must effect change; he must make things happen." A former associate described Mr.

Dively as a "colorful and tough taskmaster. His view was that silence was consent." His strength was his vision, associates said. Mr. Dively had a commitment to corpo- Edward C. Wesley, recreation manager rate involvement in higher education.

He was co-founder of a drive to encourage local corporations to devote of their net incomes to college aid. Mr. Dively, a former vice chairman of Case Western Reserve University board of trustees, in 1976 contributed part of $750,000 to ensure a professorship in electrical engineering for the school. A conference center in the College of Urban Affairs building at Cleveland State University recently was named for Mr. Dively and his second wife, Juliette.

He helped initiate urban renewal projects for Cleveland, including Cleveland Now and Cleveland Tomorrow. Mr. Dively was a fellow and life member of the American Management Association and a director of Warner Swasey Co. He is survived by his wife; a son, Michael A. of Traverse City, three stepsons, Paul Howland of Lansing, John G.

Howland of Glencoe, and Perry F. Howland of Russell Township; six grandchildren; and a sister. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Plymouth Church of Shaker Heights, 2860 Coventry Rd. recreation manager "He knew all the kids, east and west," a family friend said.

"He didn't look at the clock. If something had to be done for the kids or at the centers, he stayed and did it." Mr. Wesley came to Cleveland from Oakman, in 1918. He attended old Central High School, took courses at Fenn College and graduated from John Marshall School of Law, but did not take a bar examination. His work with youths was interrupted during World War II while Mr.

Wesley served with the Army. He returned to his city recreation job in 1946. He is survived by his wife, Christine sons, Glynn of Cleveland and Gary of Dalton, two grandchildren; and a sister. Y. Services will be at 7 p.m.

Death Notiers Dively Edward Carlyle Wesley was a manager at city recreation sites for 40 years. When Mr. Wesley retired from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Properties in 1983, he was manager of the John F. Kennedy Recreation Center on Harvard Ave. and overseer for two other centers.

He started to work for the city as a playground manager in 1940. Co-workers said Mr. Wesley's greatest asset was his affection for the young people whom he worked with and counseled. Mr. Wesley, 74, of Cleveland died Saturday at Cleveland Clinic Hospital of heart failure stemming from a respiratory ailment.
