Mr. James was a member and past president of the Kiwanis Club; member of the Fortnightly and Progressive Clubs; chairman of Red Cross Board; chairman of Library Board; treasurer of Child Health and Welfare past president of USO Committee; past director of Camp Hope, summer camp for Mentally Retarded Children of South Carolina.

He served as president of the Sumter County Education Assn. and was a member of the South Carolina Education Association and the National Education Association. He also served as a member of the nominating committee of the American Association of School Business Officials, and was an active member of both the national and state School Business Officials associations. He attended the schools of Union, S.C., received his bachelor's degree from Presbyterian College and the master of education degree from the University of South Carolina. He served as teacher and high school.

principal in Union for 13 years, and was superintendent of the Mayesville School from 1948 to 1952. Beginning in 1952 he served as supervising principal of an area in Sumter School District No. 2, andlater became coordinator of instruction for Sumter School District No. 2. 2 in 1956 and has also served as assistant superintendent for the past several years. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alice Griffin James; two daughters, Mrs. Allison Richardson of Berkley, Calif. and Miss Margaret G.

James of Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Dudley C. Beaty of Mayesville; one brother, Bernard B. James of Union. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the Mayesville Presbyterian Church by Rev.

Denny M. Hill and the Rev. Ralph McCaskill Sr. Interment will follow in the Mayesville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be W.
