AUSTIN, Texas –Four standouts in the pool and in the classroom – Arizona State University’s Jonny Kulow, Kyle Micallef of Florida Southern College, Kenyon College’s Noah Hargrove, and Fabio Martin Rojo of Lindsey Wilson College – highlight the 2023-24 Academic All-America® men’s swimming & diving teams selected by College Sports Communicators.

Kulow (Division I), Micallef (Division II), Hargrove (Division III) and Martin Rojo (NAIA) have each been named the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for their respective divisions.


NCAA Division I

2023-24 Academic All-America® Men's Swimming & Diving Teams announced for all NCAA and NAIA divisions (1)

Jonny Kulow is a sophom*ore microbiology major with a 4.00 GPA. He is a five-time PAC-12 champion, including four this past season. He was part of four winning relays – 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. He holds the NCAA record in the 400-yard medley relay (2:47.53) and 400-yard freestyle relay (2:43.40).

The native of Lander, Wyoming helped Arizona State win its first NCAA Division I National Championship while winning two events. He was part of the winning 400 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay along with placing third in the 200 free relay, eighth in the 50-yard freestyle and 13th in the 100-yard freestyle.

Kulow competed at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile where he won six medals. That included the gold medal in the 400 mixed medley and 400 medley relay along with silver medals in the 100m freestyle, 4x100 free relay, mixed 4x100 free relay and 50 freestyle. He was named to U.S. National Team for 2023-24.

Seven of the 30 members of the Academic All-America® Division I men’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 10 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.89.

Six student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division I men’s team – Coby Carrozza (University of Texas), Noah Duperre (Texas), Josh Matheny (Indiana University), Luke Maurer (Stanford University), Ron Polonsky (Stanford), and Björn Seeliger (University of California, Berkeley).

NCAA Division II

2023-24 Academic All-America® Men's Swimming & Diving Teams announced for all NCAA and NAIA divisions (2)

For the second year in a row Florida Southern boasts the Division II Team Member of the Year. Kyle Micallef is the 2023-24 recipient after Matteo Zampese was recognized in 2022-23. Micallef is a senior accounting major with a 3.92 GPA. He is now a two-time Academic All-America® after earning first-team honors a year ago, as well.

The native of Melbourne, Australia capped an incredible career with an NCAA championship in the 50-yard freestyle. He set a school and Sunshine State Conference record with a time of 19.28 to become Florida Southern’s 13th men’s swimming national champion.

Micallef is a 22-time All-American, with six coming this past season. In addition to his national championship in the 50-freestyle he was part of a fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay team and sixth-place 200-yard medley relay team plus earned All-American accolades in the 400-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard medley relay.

At this year's SSC Championships, Micallef won the 50 freestyle and placed second in the 100 freestyle, along with adding three relay titles to earn his third All-SSC honor of his career. He was a four-time SSC individual champion in his career.

Six of the 31 members of the Academic All-America® Division II men’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 10 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.91.

There are nine repeat selections on the Academic All-America® Division II men’s swimming & diving teams, including Micallef – Cedric Buessing (University of Indianapolis), Charles Burroughs (Colorado School of Mines), Asger Hartvig (Carson-Newman University), Trevor Jones (Wayne State University), Seth Krause (Colorado School of Mines), Ludwig Mueller (Florida Southern), Ben Sampson (Colorado Mesa University), and Tim Stollings (University of Findlay). Sampson is now a three-time Academic All-America®. He was a first-team selection a year ago and a third-team honoree in 2021-22.

The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist the College Sports Communicators with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2023-24 Division II Academic All-America® program.

NCAA Division III

2023-24 Academic All-America® Men's Swimming & Diving Teams announced for all NCAA and NAIA divisions (3)

Noah Hargrove is an economics and mathematics major with a 3.97 GPA. A native of Charlottesville, Virginia the senior is now a two-time Academic All-American® after earning third-team accolades a year ago.

He is a seven-time All-American, earning first-team honors three times and second-team four times. He has helped Kenyon finish second at the NCAA Division III National Championships the last two years. Earlier this year he earned All-American twice, placing fifth in the 400 IM and sixth in the 800-freestyle relay.

In 2023 Hargrove was a four-time All-American, coming in sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay, ninth in the 400-yard IM, 12thin the 200-yard butterfly, and 13thin 200-yard IM. Finally, he captured his first All-American certificate in 2022 thanks to an 11th-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly.

Hargrove is also an eight-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference honoree, earning first-team honors four times, second-team once and third-team three times. He helped Kenyon to its second straight NCAC championship and third in four years. He was the NCAC champion in the 200-yard butterfly and the 800-yard freestyle relay while placing second in the 400-yard IM and third in the 200-yard IM.

Eight of the 30 members of the Academic All-America® Division III men’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The 10 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.97.

NAIA

2023-24 Academic All-America® Men's Swimming & Diving Teams announced for all NCAA and NAIA divisions (4)

Fabio Martin Rojo is a mathematics major with a minor in physics. The junior from Valladolid, Spain has a 3.89 GPA. He became just the second men’s swimmer at Lindsey Wilson to win a national championship in the program’s history after capturing the national title in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 15:43.95. He helped the team finished ninth at the NAIA National Championships. Martin Rojo was named the 2023-24 Lindsey Wilson College Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The national title in the 1,650-yard freestyle was the ninth All-American performance for Martin Rojo. He also earned All-America honors in the 500-yard freestyle in 2024 and was a four-time All-American in 2023 – 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle, and 800-yard freestyle relay. In 2022 he turned in All-American performances in the 500-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle, and 800-yard freestyle relay.

In addition, he is an 11-Time All Mid-South Conference honoree. That includes five first-team honors, five second-team honors, and one third-team. He is a two-time NAIS Scholar-Athlete.

One of the 10 members of the Academic All-America® NAIA men’s swimming & diving teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA. The ten members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.83.

There are three repeat performers on the NAIA team – Andre Bazzana (Milligan University), Mason Beall (Olivet Nazarene University), and Mikhi Hassim (St. Ambrose University) – were on the 2022-23 team.
